Do you know what material that passes through your hands every day is considered private information? What can happen if private information gets into the wrong hands? This program discusses how to protect yourself and others from identity theft to safeguard private information in the workplace and at home. This program will help you to:

  • Recognize the role Federal legislation plays in privacy issues
  • Identify information that is considered "private" and how to protect this information
  • Determine what to do at home to keep personal information private

Topics

  • Pennsylvania and Federal legislation related to policy issues
  • The "employee's duty" at work in units that have special levels of concern based on law or Penn State policy
  • The USA Patriot Act of 2001 and how it affects your privacy
  • Protecting private information in the workplace
  • Identify theft and how to protect yourself

Brown-bag Series Schedule

Each brown-bag will begin at Noon and will end at 1:00. Feel free to bring your own lunch and invite a colleague!

Remote campus locations may attend via Adobe Connect or view the recorded session at a later date. Registration is required to attend in person due to the room capacity limitations. Those wishing to participate through Adobe Connect are also encouraged to register.

Note that the brownbag registration is open; however, not all of the official registration links are not available. In the meantime, if you would like to sign up for any of the sessions which do not have a registration link listed, please send an email to Jenn Stewart indicating the preferred medium of attendance (classroom or Adobe Connect). Each session will be held from Noon - 1:00 in room 508 Rider, through Adobe Connect and available via recording shortly after the session.

May 23, 2012 "Student Internships: Guidance on Contracting and Insurance Issues and the Role of the University" by Richel Perretti and Karen Hine

This presentation is geared towards faculty and staff members involved with Penn State student internships and will be co-presented by Risk Management and the Office of General Counsel. This presentation will address what is and is not allowable regarding contracts and insurance requirements from internship sites, as well as explain how internship agreements (or affiliation agreements) are processed for the authorized University signature. This presentation will also help define the role University employees should have relating to student internships as well as identifying important boundaries. Although this presentation will focus mainly on Penn State students interning elsewhere, student interns interning at Penn State will also be touched upon. Register for the classroom session. October 19, 2012 "Fraud Risk and Prevention" by Judy Mudgett

Fraud Risk, Identification and Deterrence – Our discussion will identify common types of financial frauds encountered at Universities, how to spot indicators, and how compliance with University Policies and procedures, together with common sense can minimize the possibility of fraud happening in your work area.  We will also discuss how to do a fraud risk  self-assessment and give tips on how to respond if you suspect something  may be “not quite right”. March 14, 2012 "Practicing Safe Communication while on the Road" by Matthew Cover

Attendees can expect to learn more about the various laws and policies related to text messages and cell phone use while operating vehicles. This would include information about PSU Policy SY 37, which outlines cellular phone operation while on University business. Further discussion will lead into Governor Corbett’s Senate Bill 314 (SB 314).  SB 314 prohibits sending, reading, or writing a text based communication on interactive wireless communication devices for all drivers while driving a vehicle.  This legislation takes effect on March 8, 2012.
